Housed in a 40.5mm stainless steel case with the model’s signature rounded-octagon bezel and horizontally embossed case flanks, the watch pairs a silvery opaline dial with a monocounter at 6 o’clock tracking both the 60-minute and 12-hour chronograph totals, alongside a date window at 3 o’clock. The self-winding Caliber CH 28-520 C powers the watch, a flyback chronograph movement with a vertical clutch for smooth pusher engagement, a 21K gold central rotor, and a 55-hour power reserve, visible through the sapphire exhibition caseback. The integrated stainless steel bracelet carries the same horizontal-brushed finish as the case, joined by a fold-over deployant clasp, continuing the design language Gerald Genta established with the original 3700 Nautilus. Water-resistant to 120 meters, the 5980/1A remains one of the most difficult Patek Philippe references to acquire at retail, and it stands as the benchmark modern sports chronograph against which the rest of the category is measured.
