This Audemars Piguet Skeleton Chronograph, reference 5556, is a rare 18k yellow gold wristwatch built around a fully openworked, hand-engraved manual-winding chronograph movement. Audemars Piguet’s skeleton chronographs of the 1980s and early 1990s were based on the Valjoux 23 column-wheel ébauche, which the manufacture’s craftsmen cut away and decorated by hand until only the essential structure remained. The result is visible through sapphire crystals front and back, with no conventional dial: the gilded bridges, wheels and jewels form the face of the watch, while slender black hands display the hours and minutes, small seconds at 9 o’clock, a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and a central chronograph seconds hand. The round yellow gold case features a stepped bezel framed by hand-engraved decoration, round pushers and a pull-out winding crown. It is worn on an integrated 18k yellow gold woven mesh bracelet with a matching engraved folding clasp. Produced in very small numbers, these skeleton chronographs represent the decorative side of Le Brassus watchmaking, where traditional engraving and openworking take precedence over everyday function, and they appear infrequently on the market today.
