The Rolex Submariner Date, reference 168000, is a stainless steel dive watch from the transitional period of the Submariner line, when Rolex moved the model to a sapphire crystal and a new generation of movements during the 1980s. A black aluminum bezel with a luminous pip at 12 and engraved 60-minute scale frames the black dial, which carries round and rectangular luminous markers, Mercedes-style hands and a Cyclops lens over the date window at 3 o’clock. The dial print reads Swiss T less than 25, the marking used on dials with tritium luminous material, which is typical of the era. The automatic movement is a Rolex caliber with quickset date and approximately 42 hours of power reserve, and the case is water-resistant to 300 meters with a screw-down crown. It is fitted to an Oyster bracelet with a folding clasp. Vintage-leaning Submariner dates from this period are valued for their compact 40mm proportions and aluminum bezels, which age with character, and the transitional dial details add collector interest.
