The Rolex Explorer II, reference 226570, is a 42 mm Oystersteel watch with a white dial, often called the Polar by collectors. The Explorer II was first made in 1971 for cave explorers and polar expeditions, and it is built for places where it is hard to tell day from night. A fixed steel bezel carries a 24-hour scale, and a bright orange GMT hand points to the hour on that scale, which lets the wearer read a second time zone or tell whether it is morning or evening. The white dial has large round and bar markers with a black outline and luminous fill, Mercedes-style hands, and a date window with a cyclops lens at 3 o’clock. The case has a screw-down crown and is water resistant to 100 meters. The Oyster bracelet closes with the Oysterlock folding clasp with an Easylink extension. Inside, the self-winding caliber 3285 is a Superlative Chronometer movement with a power reserve of about 70 hours. It is a rugged and legible tool watch that suits the wrist well.
