Description
Most watches hide their precision. The Bernhard Lederer Central Impulse Chronometer ref. CIC9012.60.801 puts it on display through two synchronized seconds hands rotating in opposite directions, each driven by its own independent gear train and remontoir system.
The rhodium dial exposes this symmetry through overlapping small seconds displays arranged in a figure-eight layout. Turn the 44 mm white gold case over and the sapphire caseback showcases sharply beveled bridges, frosted plates, and the twin escapement system beneath. The manually wound movement runs at 3Hz and carries chronometer certification from both COSC and the Besançon Observatory.
Most mechanical watches rely on a Swiss lever escapement. It’s reliable, it’s proven, it’s used by pretty much everyone. The downside is friction, and friction means lubrication, and lubrication means performance changes over time. So Bernhard looked at it and said: what if we started over? Instead of one gear train, the watch has two. Instead of one mainspring barrel, two. Instead of one escape wheel, two.
This watch solves problems most watchmakers simply accept.
Each side has its own constant force system called a remontoire, and they alternate every five seconds, so while one side is delivering energy the other is recharging. The result is an incredibly stable flow of power to the balance wheel, whether the watch was wound five minutes ago or thirty hours ago. No surprise it won the 2021 GPHG Innovation Prize. What I love most about it is not what it does — it’s how it does it.
