How the GMT-Master II

1955 – 1959

The original GMT-Master was developed in collaboration with Pan American World Airways for their transatlantic pilots. The 6542 displayed a second time zone via a red 24-hour hand against a bi-color red and blue acrylic bezel — the original Pepsi. It was a functional pilot’s instrument, not a luxury watch, and Rolex priced it accordingly.

1959 – 1980

The 1675 is the longest-running and most collected GMT-Master reference. Produced for over two decades in steel, yellow gold, and two-tone, it became the watch of choice for airlines, military pilots, and travelers. The aluminum bezel insert arrived with this reference, replacing the fragile Bakelite of the 6542. Tropical dials and gilt writing are the most sought-after variants.

1983 – 1988

The GMT-Master II designation introduced a key functional upgrade: the hour hand can now be set independently from the GMT hand in one-hour increments, allowing the wearer to track three time zones simultaneously. The 16750 was the first GMT-Master II, though it still used an aluminum bezel.

1988 – 2007

The 16710 is the last GMT-Master II with an aluminum bezel and the reference that established the modern GMT aesthetic. The Pepsi (red/blue) and Coke (red/black) configurations were the primary options. The 16710LN with an all-black bezel also existed. The 16710 is now discontinued and strongly appreciating on the secondary market.

2013 – 2019

The Batman arrived. Rolex introduced the first black and blue Cerachrom ceramic bezel at Baselworld 2013, creating one of the most recognizable color combinations in modern watchmaking. The BLNR designation stands for Bleu-Noir. Rolex achieved the two-tone ceramic bezel through a proprietary chemical process during sintering, turning one half of a fully blue insert permanently black. The 116710BLNR ran on an Oyster bracelet and Caliber 3186.

The second-generation Batman launched on a Jubilee bracelet in 2019, immediately earning the nickname Batgirl from collectors who preferred the original Oyster configuration. Rolex addressed this in 2021 by adding the Oyster bracelet as an option, reinstating the Batman designation for the Oyster version. Both share the same reference number, the same Caliber 3285 with 70 hours of power reserve, and the same black and blue Cerachrom bezel. The 126710GRNR Bruce Wayne — grey and black bezel — joined the family in 2024.

The Oyster bracelet version reinstated by Rolex in 2021. Three-link brushed center with polished edges, Oysterlock clasp with 5mm Easylink extension. The bracelet collectors associate with the original 116710BLNR and most tool-watch purists prefer. Commands a slight premium over the Jubilee on the secondary market for full-set examples.

Jubilee Bracelet
The original bracelet configuration at launch in 2019. Five-link with brushed center links and polished outer links, Oysterlock with Easylink. The Jubilee gives the watch a dressier profile that some collectors prefer for everyday wear. Both configurations are otherwise mechanically identical.
