The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept CW1, ref. 25980AI.OO.D003SU.01, was the very first Royal Oak Concept model ever made by AP. The CW1 was introduced in 2002 to celebrate 30 years of the original Royal Oak, marking Audemars Piguet’s move toward pushing technical and design boundaries in watchmaking.
Its massive 44mm case is made from Alacrite, a lightweight yet extremely hard alloy initially developed for aircraft. The distinctive coil-shaped tourbillon bridge is actually functional, providing increased shock resistance, while the sliding power reserve indicator on the right side of the dial is certainly unusual. The non-traditional Alacrite case is paired with a titanium bezel and a rubber bracelet. The watch is driven by the manual-wind Caliber 2896 tourbillon movement, which is visible through the bold openworked dial. The “RNH” at the bottom is the function selector, indicating if the watch is in winding mode (R), neutral mode (N), or setting mode (H). This historically significant timepiece was limited to only 150 pieces.
