About the Rolex Sky-Dweller
The Rolex Sky-Dweller is Rolex’s most complicated timepiece. One field where Rolex wasn’t traditionally active (after the 1950s) was the complicated calendar watch segment. The company had launched some references with interesting functions, but typically to complete specific tasks for particular audiences. Think GMTs for pilots, chronographs for racers, dive watches for divers, and field watches for explorers. However, the introduction of the Sky-Dweller in 2012 changed that dramatically.
Complications
The Sky-Dweller is the first complicated Rolex watch featuring two time zones, a date indicator, a month indicator, and an annual calendar. Not only does the Sky-Dweller offer all of these functions but it also controls the different regulations of its movement through an innovative (and patented) mechanism that uses the crown and the rotation of its fluted dial in three different positions. This concept, called “Ring Command,” had already been used to regulate the functions of the Yacht-Master II, launched in 2007.
Movement
Powering the Sky-Dweller is the COSC-certified Rolex Caliber 9001 movement, guaranteed to achieve a “Superlative Chronometer” performance of +/-2 seconds per day. The automatic 9001 movement is equipped with the usual Rolex anti-magnetic features: the Parachrom blue hairspring and an escapement wheel of paramagnetic material. It also features a high power reserve of three days (72 hours).
Meaning of “Annual Calendar”
As its name suggests, the annual calendar of the Sky-Dweller needs to be adjusted just once per year, on March 1st. Other than that, the Sky-Dweller will automatically adjust to indicate the correct date (window at 3 o’clock) and month (12 apertures adjacent to the hour markers) on all other days of the year (as long as the watch continues to run). Moreover, there’s an off-centered 24-hour disk to indicate a second time zone.
Case
The watch features a large 42mm Oyster case, water-resistant up to 100 meters. It is available in various case metals (stainless steel, two-tone, Everose gold, yellow gold, and white gold), different dial colors, and paired with a choice of Oyster, Jubilee, or Oysterflex bracelets.
How Much Does a Rolesor Rolex Sky-Dweller Cost?
When Rolex debuted the Sky-Dweller in 2012, the watches were exclusively available in full gold cases. However, in 2017, Rolex expanded the collection to include two Rolesor models. Rolesor is the name Rolex uses to describe its watches that pair stainless steel and gold.

White Rolesor watches are predominately made in stainless steel but feature a white gold bezel. Yellow Rolesor models on the other hand are two-tone watches, combining yellow and stainless steel throughout the watch.
Steel and white gold and two-tone Sky-Dweller watches are offered with the choice of an Oyster bracelet or a Jubilee bracelet. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) is slightly more expensive for the Jubilee variant.

Furthermore, these Rolesor Sky-Dweller watches are available in a range of dial colors, each of which has the same retail price which generally varies on the secondary market. The steel and white gold Sky-Dweller ref. 326934 with a blue dial is the most popular, therefore, the most costly when purchased from a grey dealer.

How Much Does a Gold Sky-Dweller Cost?
The current Sky-Dweller collection is home to both yellow gold and Everose gold (Rolex’s proprietary rose gold alloy) variants. The Everose gold Rolex Sky-Dweller price is higher than its yellow gold counterpart.

Additionally, each of these gold Sky-Dwellers is available with either a matching gold Oyster bracelet or a sporty black rubber Oysterflex bracelet. Naturally, Oysterflex bracelet variants retail less than those with Oyster bracelets since they have less gold.

Yellow gold Sky-Dweller watches are furnished with champagne, white, or black dials while Everose gold Sky-Dwellers come with the choice of white, chocolate, or slate dials. While dial color does not have an impact on retail prices it does influence market value. Full Everose gold models with chocolate dials are currently the highest-valued Sky-Dwellers in the market.

How Much Does a Discontinued Rolex Sky-Dweller Cost?
Although the Sky-Dweller has only been a part of the Rolex catalog for a decade, the brand has already discontinued some references. For example, Rolex no longer makes a white gold Sky-Dweller (probably since it looks very similar to the much less expensive steel Sky-Dweller.) Furthermore, Rolex used to make yellow gold, white gold, and Everose gold Sky-Dwellers with leather straps. However, these were discontinued in favor of the rubber Oysterflex bracelets.

It’s also worth noting that there are older Sky-Dweller dials with Arabic numerals and Roman numerals. These are no longer an option to buy from authorized dealers because Rolex has phased them out and now only uses baton indexes (filled with lume) across all current Sky-Dweller models.
