Celine Simon Thursday, October 2nd, 2025 22 min. read

As we head into the final quarter of the year, the watch world turns its attention to one of the most prestigious events on the calendar: the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG). This annual ceremony brings together the who’s who of Swiss watchmaking to celebrate the year’s best creations. For 2025, more than 300 watches from 184 brands were submitted, and the 1,050 members of the GPHG Academy narrowed the field down to 84 watches and six clocks across 15 categories. In total, 20 prizes will be awarded, with the night’s highest honor being the “Aiguille d’Or” Grand Prix. Ahead of the ceremony on Thursday, November 13, let’s take a closer look at the nominated 2025 GPHG watches.

Best Men’s Watch Nominees of GPHG 2025

For the Men’s category, GPHG selected watches from Chopard, Garrick, Grand Seiko, Laurent Ferrier, Urban Jürgensen, and Zenith. According to the rules, to be considered for this category the watch must include only basic functions: hours, minutes, seconds, a simple date, power reserve, or classic moon phases. It may also feature a digital or retrograde display, and can carry gem-setting, but no more than 9 carats in total.

To mark the 25th anniversary of its groundbreaking Quattro movement, Chopard introduced the L.U.C Quattro Mark IV, a platinum timepiece that showcases Chopard’s mastery of long power reserves in a sleek, contemporary design. Its 39mm bassine-shaped case houses the hand-wound Quattro caliber L.U.C 98.09-L, equipped with four stacked barrels that deliver an impressive nine-day power reserve while maintaining COSC-certified precision and the prestigious Poinçon de Genève hallmark.

The frosted sky-blue dial, accented with white gold hands and markers, offers a crisp display of hours, minutes, small seconds, and date, while the redesigned layout moves the power-reserve indicator to the movement side for a cleaner aesthetic.

Inside, the re-engineered manual-winding Calibre 135 with an oversized balance wheel, stop-seconds function, and COSC-certified accuracy of within ±2 seconds per day, delivers a 72-hour power reserve. At Watches and Wonders 2025, Laurent Ferrier announced that the Classic Auto Horizon would join the permanent collection (following earlier limited-edition versions) and introduced it with a horizon-blue dial for its catalog debut. Its 40mm stainless steel case houses the LF270.01 automatic caliber, a platinum micro-rotor movement offering a 72-hour power reserve, visible through the sapphire back with traditional hand-finishing including rhodium-plated Côtes de Genève and hand-polished bevels.

The horizon-blue dial features a translucent lacquer finish over a vertically satin-brushed base, complemented by white gold Assegai hands, drop-shaped indices, and a snailed small seconds subdial. At 3 o’clock, a sloping stamped aperture displays the date on a white disc with slate-grey numerals, framed for added depth and contrast.

Grand Seiko Spring Drive U.F.A.

Price: CHF 12,000

Grand Seiko introduced the Spring Drive U.F.A. (Ultra Fine Accuracy) in July 2025, powered by the new Caliber 9RB2, the most precise mainspring-driven movement ever created with an impressive annual rate of ±20 seconds. Housed in a 37mm high-intensity titanium case — the smallest Spring Drive watch to date, perfect for the petite wristed among us — the compact movement allows for slim proportions at 11.4mm while still offering a 72-hour power reserve, date display, and power-reserve indicator.

The dial, inspired by frost-covered trees in the Kirigamine Highlands near the Shinshu Watch Studio, is rendered in a silver-blue tone with a finely textured surface and accented by a tempered blue seconds hand. Completing the design is a titanium bracelet with a new three-step micro-adjustment clasp for comfort and precision on the wrist.

In August 2025, the brand introduced the UJ-2, a 39mm red gold timepiece centered on a double wheel natural escapement, a technically demanding mechanism rarely seen in modern watchmaking.

Powered by a hand-wound movement with a 52-hour reserve, the watch features a blue solid silver dial with hand-applied guilloché, complemented by heat-blued hands, a power-reserve indicator at 12 o’clock, and an off-centered running seconds display. Measuring 10.9mm thick and paired with a leather strap, the UJ-2 illustrates the brand’s philosophy of pursuing excellence through uncompromising craftsmanship.

S3 Deadbeat Seconds (Image: Garrick)

Garrick, the British independent known for its artisanal approach to bespoke watchmaking, unveiled the S3 Deadbeat Seconds – Power Reserve as a nine-piece limited edition. The 42mm steel watch houses the in-house, hand-finished Caliber DB-G07, which incorporates the rare deadbeat seconds complication, causing the seconds hand to tick in one-second steps despite its mechanical construction.

Visible on the open dial, Garrick’s oversized Trinity free-sprung balance at 6 o’clock underscores the brand’s technical identity, while applied chapter rings and observatory-style hands emphasize the handmade aesthetic. Regulated in every position over three weeks to within +3 seconds per day, the S3 Deadbeat combines precision with nearly limitless customization, from case metals to finishing styles and hand designs, offering a deeply personal take on British high horology.

The 43mm case is crafted from Brilliant Hard Titanium — brighter than conventional titanium and twice as hard as steel — and finished with a mix of Zaratsu-polished and hairline surfaces that evoke the strength of a lion’s claws.

Its textured dial, inspired by a lion’s mane, integrates three recessed sub-dials at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock for enhanced legibility, paired with updated chronograph pushers for improved usability. Water resistant to 200 meters, the watch is fitted to a newly developed high-strength rubber strap with a lion’s paw motif on the reverse. Inside, the Tentagraph caliber delivers 72 hours of power reserve even with the chronograph engaged, operating at 36,000 vph to make it the longest-running 10-beat chronograph movement in the industry.

Price: CHF 85,399

Laurent Ferrier Sport Auto 79

Laurent Ferrier debuted the Sport Auto 79 in 2025 to mark both the maison’s 15th anniversary and its founders’ third-place finish at the 1979 Le Mans 24 Hours, the race that sparked the idea of creating their own watch brand. Entirely crafted in 5N red gold, the 41.5mm case and integrated bracelet feature a cushion-shaped bezel and barrel-shaped middle case inspired by automotive design.

The cream opaline dial, treated in silver-rose, is accented with powder-grey transfers, a bevelled date window at 3 o’clock, and a snailed small seconds at 6 o’clock, while 5N gold Assegai hands and indices with Super-LumiNova ensure clarity. Powering the watch is the LF270.01 automatic micro-rotor caliber with a 72-hour reserve, decorated with ruthenium-treated bridges, hand-polished bevels, and a platinum rotor engraved with subtle nods to the 1979 race.

2024 GPHG Winners
2024 GPHG Winners (Image: GPHG)

Now, you may be wondering why so many of the top 10 luxury watch brands — think Rolex, Patek Philippe, Cartier, Omega, Vacheron Constantin, Richard Mille, and so on are missing from the list of 2025 GPHG nominees. That’s because it’s up to the brands themselves to enter the competition, and these specific brands chose not to. Is it because they think they’re above the event or that the GPHG awards have no relevance? Or perhaps they’d be too embarrassed not to win in their respective categories? We’ll never know for sure, but what we do know is that for those entering the annual competition, it is an important night that generates appreciation from peers, clients, and press.
