While IWC may be best known for its big and bold Pilot watches, the brand is also home to a fantastic array of dressier watches and complicated timepieces. IWC is showing off that skill yet again in 2023 with the brand new Portofino Complete Calendar watches, which are the first to include the new complete calendar module developed by IWC. Let’s get all the details.

What’s New?
The complete calendar complication is new to the Portofino collection, featuring the date, day of the week, month, and moon phases within two subdials. The date and month displays are at 6 o’clock whereas the day of the week and moon phases sit at 12 o’clock.
Unlike an annual calendar (which only requires one adjustment per year) or the perpetual calendar (which will only require an adjustment in the year 2100) a complete calendar watch requires manual adjustment at the end of each month which has less than 31 days.
Back to Basics:
What is an Annual Calendar?
What is a Perpetual Calendar?
However, in true IWC fashion, the Portofino Complete Calendar is user-friendly. A separate gear train drives each calendar display, therefore, they can be set independently from one another using the two correction buttons integrated into the sides of the case or the winding crown.

The Portofino Complete Calendar watches feature cases that measure 41mm in diameter and 11.7mm thick. IWC has released two versions, one in red gold (ref. IW359002) with a taupe calfskin strap and the other in stainless steel (ref. IW359001) with a blue calfskin strap. Like all Portofino watches, these new references include slim bezels, slightly bulbous silhouettes, and arched lugs for that distinctive casual elegance that has defined the collection since 1984.

The new calendar module is mounted on top of the IWC-manufactured Caliber 32150 movement, which features a power reserve of 72 hours that’s rewound by a pawl winding system. The movement is, of course, visible through the sapphire crystal caseback.

Our Thoughts
We believe IWC dress watches and complicated timepieces are some of the most underrated in the market. Despite their attractive designs, expert engineering, and high-quality materials, dressier IWC pieces often fly under the radar among the general watch enthusiast community. This is good news for those looking for a top-notch luxury watch at a great price.

The new Portofino Complete Calendar is an excellent new offering from IWC. It’s a solid addition to the recently released lineup of Portofino calendar watches, which includes the Portofino Perpetual Calendar and Portofino Pointer Date. A complete calendar sits somewhere in between an ultra-complex perpetual calendar and a simple date watch.
Does this IWC release point to the rebirth of the men’s dress watch trend we recently discussed? Yes, it does.
Beyond just the new watches, perhaps the introduction of the Portofino calendar watches will help attract some attention to the brand’s collection of non-Pilot and non-sport watches. There’s certainly plenty to discover there.

I like everything about the IWC EXCEPT the ROMAN NUMERALS at 6 snd 12. What the heck, those chopped off sticks look ridiculous. Those sticks ruin the flow of the dial.
The dial would certainly look cleaner without them!
