New For 2024: Jacob & Co. Oil Pump Watch
In 2019, Jacob & Co. unveiled the Oil Pump watch, featuring an intricate automaton depicting an oil derrick. Now, on the fifth anniversary of the maiden model, a new updated version joins Jacob & Co.’s catalog complete with a redesigned case and new movement.
Design
The new-for-2024 Jacob & Co. Oil Pump watch has been significantly reduced in size from its original 49.5mm in diameter to a much more wearable 44mm. The case’s profile has also been slimmed down to 18mm from 20mm. The bulbous case is fashioned from 18k rose gold and sapphire crystal, setting the stage for the automaton show inside the expansive dial.
While an oil extraction scene may be a controversial one to depict, the work that went into it is undoubtedly admirable. Each intricately crafted component was hand-finished including rose gold-plated derricks, barrels, and pipelines. Pressing the pusher at 1:30 will activate the bobbing motion of the oil derrick, lasting 35 seconds. Accompanying the mini movie is an off-centered single-axis, one-minute flying tourbillon spanning 3 to 5 o’clock, which is placed on the hour and minutes subdial punctuated with Roman numerals. There’s also a power reserve indicator, placed at about 7 o’clock on the dial.
Powering the new Jacob & Co. Oil Pump watch is the new in-house Caliber JCAM53 manual winding movement, operating at 21,600 beats per hour (3 Hz) and supplying 72 hours of power reserve. To avoid the design disruption a winding crown would create, winding and time-setting is done via a pair of bows on the back of the case.
The 2024 Jacob & Co. Oil Pump timepiece is finished off with a black alligator strap, furnished with an 18k rose gold and titanium deployant buckle.
