In 2024, hype about “women wearing men’s watches” is years in the rearview mirror at this point. While it is now perfectly acceptable for women to wear watches of any size they like, small women’s luxury watches have made a decisive comeback. Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual 31, for instance, remains red hot. And now Glashütte Original has chosen to release a groundbreaking moonphase movement as part of a new 32.5mm-wide lineup of ladies’ models: Serenade Luna. The Glashütte Original Serenade Luna features an extra-large moonphase display made possible by an all-new movement that just might make the “axe blade” window obsolete. Here are the details of this new Glashutte moonphase.
The Serenade Luna lineup, offered in seven variants, joins three other lines of women’s watches in the Glashütte Original catalog: Panomatic Luna, a traditional moonphase with a 39.4mm diameter; the 31mm cushion-case Pavolina with vintage-inspired movable lugs; and the classic 36mm time-and-date Lady Serenade.
Serenade Luna Options
The Serenade Luna’s 32.5mm case is available in red gold or stainless steel. On the steel version of this Glashutte moonphase, you can choose a smooth or diamond-set bezel, blue or mother-of-pearl dial, and blue alligator strap or steel bracelet. The diamond-set bezel is only available with the mother-of-pearl dial. The blue dial on a strap is the cheapest configuration, with a list price of $10,400. The MOP dial adds $500, the bracelet adds $1,100, and the diamond bezel adds $3,300.
The red gold version is only available in one configuration: green alligator strap, green dial, and diamond-set bezel. MSRP is $22,700. The straps have a quick-release function, and all the dials have diamond-set hour markers.

New Innovative Glashutte Moonphase Display
Most moonphase complications have an “axe blade” opening. A disc with two opposing circles, representing the visible part of the moon, makes a rotation every 29.5 days or so. As time progresses, the correct amount of moon should “peek” through the axe blade, as seen on this Roger Dubuis:
That results in a pretty small “moon” to look at, but the new Glashutte moonphase movement has solved this problem. Calibre 35 uses a unique approach to provide a much larger moon display. A rotating mother-of-pearl disc the size of the entire dial has four circles representing the unlit part of the moon:
So, the implied “moon” nicely fills the entire height of its opening–very cool. But I have to express a minor pet peeve of mine: I wish there were no stars on the moonphase disc. That’s supposed to be the unlit part of the moon, and you can’t see stars through the unlit part of the moon! Alas, this is an artistic license that other brands have also taken with their moonphase watches. I get it; stars are cool.
Glashutte Original Moonphase Movement Up Close
Unsurprisingly, macro photos of this new Glashutte moonphase movement, Calibre 35, are an absolute joy. You can see why Glashütte Original has gained such a reputation for impeccable movement finishing:
It’s good to see top watch brands like GO putting seriously innovative effort into their ladies’ models. The new style of Glashutte moonphase on the Serenade Luna is so cool that I wouldn’t be surprised if we see it on men’s watches soon too, though.
