How Much Does An Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Cost?

Adrian Taskin Saturday, January 24th, 2026 10 min. read

In the luxury watch world, a handful of models have reached “hype watch” status, and the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is a prime example. Its popularity has surged in the past 6-7 years in particular, leading to limited availability at AP boutiques and soaring prices on the secondary market. So how much do Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watches cost? Well, it depends on the model, and in some cases there are more affordable older pre-owned models to consider We’ll break it down.

How Much Does An Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Cost?
How Much Does An Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Cost?

2026 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak list prices start at $19,900 for a 33mm stainless steel model with a quartz movement, while automatic 37mm models start at $30,400. But true market pricing is often higher, and the most exotic grand complications and gem-set options can even push prices into seven figures.

Royal Oak Jumbo 15202ST
The previous-generation Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo in stainless steel, ref. 15202ST, is typically priced around $65,000 secondhand today.

But there’s a lot more to the Royal Oak market than just current models. Audemars Piguet has been making the Royal Oak since the early 1970s. It has spawned countless variations in size, material, complications, and design — like the Royal Oak Offshore and Royal Oak Concept offshoots. If you’re looking to understand Audemars Piguet Royal Oak price ranges cost across the board — vintage or modern, men’s or women’s, new or pre-owned — keep reading. We’ve got everything you need to know.

Brief History of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

The Royal Oak is, without a doubt, Audemars Piguet’s most iconic watch. It also holds the distinction of being the world’s first true luxury sports watch, launched in 1972 — a release that forever changed the landscape of modern horology.

Designed by legendary watchmaker Gerald Genta, the Royal Oak made its debut at the annual Swiss Watch Show (later renamed Baselworld). Its design was revolutionary: an octagonal bezel secured by eight visible screws, a seamless integrated bracelet, and a textured dial displaying the time and date.

Perhaps most radical of all was the fact that the original Royal Oak was made from stainless steel but priced like a gold watch — or in some cases, even more. The steel Royal Oak’s inaugural 3300 CHF price tag was roughly 4x that of a Rolex Submariner–an MSRP ratio that still holds to this day (roughly $40,000 for a 2026 Jumbo vs. $10,000 for today’s Submariner). This bold pricing move by Audemars Piguet signaled that the Royal Oak was something entirely new: a high-end sports watch for the modern elite.

The debut model, reference 5402, quickly earned the nickname “Jumbo.” While 39mm may not seem oversized by today’s standards, it was unusually large in the early 1970s. Even so, the case remained impressively thin at just 7mm, thanks to the ultra-slim Caliber 2121 — itself based on the Caliber 2120 but modified to include a date function.

Audemars Piguet celebrated the Royal Oak’s 50th anniversary in 2022 with a wave of new releases, including updated Jumbo references. A few more Royal Oak “Jumbo” iterations followed over the next few years.

Before diving into how much Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watches cost, it’s important to understand five factors that influence their pricing: complication, material, size, dial color, and age (usually in that order). There are two-hand Royal Oaks, flagship models with multiple high complications, and everything in between. You can see our guide to AP Royal Oak complications to see the long list of impressive movements they’ve offered, but now let’s dive more into case and bracelet materials.

How Much Does An Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo Cost?

When you hear the term Royal Oak “Jumbo”, it refers to the original Royal Oak ref. 5402ST or the subsequent references produced in its image. These Jumbo models are officially known as Extra-Thin Royal Oaks and are characterized by four key traits:

  • Fatter bezel than other Royal Oaks
  • 39mm case diameter
  • No seconds hand — just hours and minutes
  • An ultra-slim automatic movement (originally the Caliber 2121, now upgraded to Caliber 7121)

The current steel Royal Oak Jumbo, ref. 16202ST, lists for $40,100 as of 2026

Audemars Piguet has made several generations of the RO Jumbo since 1972. Here’s a list of the various Jumbo references and their introduction years.

  • 1972: Royal Oak Jumbo ref. 5402

  • 1996: Royal Oak Jumbo ref. 15002 (very low production, by some estimates less than 200 examples)
  • 2000: Royal Oak Jumbo ref. 15202
  • 2012: Redesigned Royal Oak Jumbo ref. 15202 to celebrate the 40th Anniversary
  • 2022: Royal Oak Jumbo ref. 16202 to celebrate 50th Anniversary, fitted with a new Caliber 7121

While most Jumbo references feature closed dials, Audemars Piguet has also produced Extra-Thin Openworked versions for collectors looking for a more elaborate display of movement architecture.

Among all these, the original A-Series ref. 5402 remains one of the most sought-after by collectors — it’s the very first Royal Oak, after all. That said, it’s not always the most expensive on the market. Prices can vary widely depending on condition, provenance, and rarity.

How Much Does An Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Cost?

Royal Oak Selfwinding ref. 15510ST
Royal Oak Selfwinding 41mm ref. 15510ST

“Standard” might not be the perfect term, but in general, a standard Audemars Piguet Royal Oak refers to the regular production models featuring time and date displays. While the Royal Oak Jumbos are especially prized by collectors, these mainstream variants — officially known as Royal Oak Selfwinding models — appeal to a much broader audience. When most people picture a Royal Oak, it’s usually this “standard” style they’re thinking of.

Royal Oak Selfwinding 37mm ref. 77350CE

The standard Royal Oak collection is also far more expansive, covering a wider range of sizes, metals, and dial colors. Audemars Piguet officially kicked off this line with the launch of the Royal Oak Selfwinding ref. 15300 in 2005. While the 15300 kept the familiar 39mm diameter of the Jumbo, it introduced a thicker case, a sturdier bracelet, and a different movement: the Caliber 3120 with a central seconds hand. That’s one of the easiest ways to distinguish a Royal Oak Jumbo from a mainstream Selfwinding model — Jumbos lack a seconds hand, while Selfwinding versions include one.

How Much Does A Midsize Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Cost?

We should also mention the “midsize” Royal Oak Selfwinding models (which are 36mm aside from the 35mm ref. 4100). They were offered from about 1977-2006.

While Audemars Piguet no longer makes them, pre-owned “midsize” Royal Oak models (36mm aside from the 35mm ref. 4100) are still popular in the secondary market. AP toyed with several revisions before landing on the 14790 family, which lasted almost 15 years. How Much Does A Complicated Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Cost?

Before the Royal Oak, Audemars Piguet was already celebrated for its expertise in high-end mechanical watchmaking, particularly with complications like perpetual calendars, tourbillons, and minute repeaters. So it was only a matter of time before the brand began applying that technical mastery to the Royal Oak. In 1984, AP launched the first Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar, followed by the introduction of the Royal Oak Tourbillon in 1997.

Today, the Audemars Piguet catalog is filled with complicated Royal Oak models — and as you might expect, they can be ultra-expensive. Some complicated Royal Oaks have been released as collaborations too, including partnerships with Cactus Jack and John Mayer.. Most recently, in 2025, Audemars Piguet unveiled a brand-new Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar with a major upgrade: it can now be fully adjusted via the crown instead of traditional case pushers. Royal Oak prices of models with complications are typically in the six-figure range, sometimes even reaching seven figures.

How Much Does An Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Cost?

In 1993, Audemars Piguet launched the Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph to celebrate the Royal Oak’s 20th anniversary (albeit a year late, as production delays pushed the release).

Developed for a younger audience, the Offshore offered a contemporary take on the original, featuring an oversized 42mm case, rubber-clad pushers and crown, a visible gasket under the eight-sided bezel, and a dial with bolder, more exaggerated details. While the original Royal Oak picked up the “Jumbo” nickname, the first Royal Oak Offshore quickly earned the nickname “The Beast.”

Audemars Piguet soon expanded the Offshore line to include a wide range of chronographs, divers, and other complications — often incorporating modern materials like ceramic and rubber.

Over the years, AP has produced several generations of the standard Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Chronograph 42mm:

  • 1993: Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph 42mm ref. 25721
  • 1996: Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph 42mm “Tropical” ref. 25770
