Among Rolex’s sporting partnerships, its collaboration with Wimbledon is one of the best-known. Rolex and Wimbledon joined forces in 1978 and since then, the Crown’s branding can be seen all over the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club where The Championships are held every summer. Aside from on-site branding, Rolex has also produced a few Datejust watches inspired by Wimbledon’s color scheme. The Wimbledon dial is characterized by green-outlined black enamel Roman numerals on a slate gray dial. While they’re not officially called Rolex Wimbledon watches, that’s what they’re known within Rolex collecting communities — and the brand isn’t shy about making the link. Keep reading for a comprehensive guide to Rolex Wimbledon watches.

What is a Wimbledon Rolex?

If a Rolex Datejust has a “Wimbledon dial,” that’s referring to these four characteristics:

  • Slate dial
  • Black enamel Roman numerals
  • Green outlines
  • Bar of lume at 9 o’clock

Let’s start with the very first one.

The OG – Rolex Datejust II Wimbledon

Wimbledon Rolex watches are exclusive to the Datejust collection. The first iteration came out at Baselworld in 2009 with the debut of the Datejust II. The Datejust II was a larger version of the classic Datejust 36mm, sporting a case that was 41mm in diameter. (Side note: the collection didn’t last too long as Rolex replaced the Datejust II with the Datejust 41 line in 2016, which had the same on-paper diameter yet slimmer and more elegant proportions.)

The Datejust II with a Wimbledon dial was initially only available in one form: the two-tone steel and yellow gold Datejust II ref. 116333 with a fluted bezel and Oyster bracelet. One complaint of this particular dial is that the black enamel Roman numerals are not lumed; the only luminous components are the hands and the 9 o’clock baton marker. There’s also a gold-outlined version of this particular dial, but only the green version is considered a Wimbledon.

Black Wimbledon Dial

It’s worth mentioning that the steel Datejust II ref. 116300 (and the version with a white gold bezel, ref. 116334) was offered with a similar dial featuring black enamel Roman numerals and a 9 o’clock lume bar. These are sometimes erroneously labeled as Wimbledon dials.

Not technically a Rolex Wimbledon Dial – aka a “Black Wimbledon”

However, since they do not include the slate gray background or green outlines on the hour markers, they’re not true Wimbledon dials — perhaps “Black Wimbledon Dial” is the more correct term.

Rolex Wimbledon Datejust 41

As mentioned, Rolex launched the Datejust 41 collection in 2016 to carry on the torch for its large-sized Datejust model. The Datejust 41 lineup benefits from the new-gen Caliber 3235 movement, and it includes two options the Datejust II didn’t: Jubilee bracelets, and a two-tone rose gold option.

  • Steel Wimbledon Rolex Datejust 41

Interestingly, Rolex made sure to offer the Wimbledon dial in every single configuration. This time around, the dial is available regardless of metal, bezel or bracelet. As always, these Wimbledon dials include non-lumed black enameled Roman numerals with green outlines sitting on a slate gray background.

For fans of tennis and smaller Rolex watches, the company now also makes Datejust 36 watches with Wimbledon dials. Similar to the 41mm variants, Datejust 36 Wimbledon models are available in an array of metals and combined with various bezels and bracelets. Plus, Rolex even offers diamond-set bezels with the Datejust 36 Wimbledon dial, which means even more variation.

An Expansive Rolex Wimbledon Lineup

In less than two decades, the Rolex Wimbledon range went from one variation to 30! That’s quite the expansion. It’s clear that Rolex has leaned into its distinct tennis-inspired gray with green-framed Roman numerals dial — and judging by its popularity, it’s become a fan-favorite among customers too.
