W&W2024
This article is part of our Watches and Wonders 2024 coverage.
If you watch the America’s Cup, and you see a boat with a big Panerai logo on its sail, that’s the Italian Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing team. Panerai’s partnership with the team has resulted in several Luna Rossa models, which generally have blue or white dials and a strap with a signature red stripe in the middle. Panerai seems to be betting big on its Submersible line lately, and they released five new Submersible Luna Rossa models for Watches & Wonders 2024. Three are time-and-date models (including a new “Ti-Ceramitech” case option), one is an impressive skeletonized tourbillon watch, and one is a sporty GMT diver. We’ll give you all the details of the Panerai 2024 releases here.
There have been several Panerai Luna Rossa models over the years; most were variations of the classic Luminor. The Submersible, Panerai’s more modern lineup that features a dive bezel, has only been made in two previous Luna Rossa versions. 2019’s PAM 1039 had an interesting sailcloth dial and a 47mm Carbotech case, while 2022’s PAM 1391 was a steel 44mm model with a blue dial and steel bezel. This article is part of our full Watches and Wonders 2024 coverage, but for now let’s get to the five new Submersible Luna Rossa references released by Panerai:
PAM 1565
The PAM 1565 is essentially the same thing as the existing PAM 1068, except with a black bezel and a red seconds hand. Its 42mm case size is the smallest in the Submersible lineup. The 47mm and even 44mm Submersibles are too big for a lot of people. The 42mm versions are more accessible, but by no means small. Panerai has only been making 42mm Submersibles since 2017, and this is the first Luna Rossa one. The PAM 1565 will exclusively be sold online through Panerai.com.
The caseback is engraved with a picture of a “Slow-Running Torpedo,” a unique Italian covert weapon used during WWII. It was literally a manned torpedo that could carry two operators who would place explosives on enemy ships. They successfully destroyed several British ships, in case you forgot who Italy was fighting for at first, but it’s…a cool engraving.

Panerai PAM 1466, PAM 1543
Aside from its new Ti-Ceramitech case and bezel material, the 44mm PAM 1466 is just like a previous Panerai Luna Rossa model, PAM 1391. It has a blue dial with the now-familiar “QuarantaQuattro” (44mm) version of the Submersible case, a rotating dive bezel, a rubber/textile hybrid strap with a distinctive red stripe, and the P.900 movement with a three-day power reserve. Panerai has also unveiled a white-dial version, PAM 1543. But let’s talk about the Ti-Ceramitech case, because it’s a pretty big deal, and the coolest part of the Panerai 2024 releases in my opinion.
Panerai has submitted a patent for Ti-Ceramitech, which is not typical ceramic. It’s more like a layer of ceramic chemically created on top of titanium, via a process known as plasma electrolytic oxidation. So you get a lightweight case that shatters less easily than standard ceramic. In fact, “the resultant case is 44% lighter than steel yet has fracture toughness ten times higher than traditional ceramic” according to Panerai. Not only that, but they’re able to tweak the electrolyte compositions involved in the process to tweak the color, and they’ve achieved a very cool blue color with these models.

Panerai PAM 1405
Often, the movements of skeletonized watches look fairly similar–lots of shiny fancy metal edges and gears. But the P.2015/T movement in the new Submersible Tourbillon GMT Luna Rossa Experience Edition (ref. PAM01405) looks like it was designed to look more “badass” than “fancy.” The black accents complement the Carbotech case nicely. It’s a highly sophisticated movement, featuring not only a tourbillon and a GMT hand, but also a day-night indicator, as well as a power reserve indicator on the back.
The P.2015/T seems to be the black-accented version of the P.2005/T movement found in six-figure Panerais like PAM 1060. The P.2015/T has less power reserve (4 days instead 6) presumably because it had to fit in a smaller case. PAM 1405 is the first Panerai tourbillon model to have a Carbotech case. Only 20 will be made, but with a list price of $176,500, the pool of buyers will be limited.

Panerai PAM 1507
The most notable feature of the Submersible GMT Luna Rossa Titanio isn’t any breakthrough in horology or chemistry, but a welcome aesthetic change. Panerai made several Submersible GMT models before, but never before in 42mm. Also, none of them have numbered 24-hour tracks. It helps keep the dial clean, but in my opinion that’s a “form over function” decision. For at-a-glance legibility, I want the 24-hour hand to point to a number I can simply read. And the 24-hour scale printed on the fat, slanted rehaut of the PAM 1507 looks pretty sweet.
The rehaut gives it a fresh look compared to other Submersibles, and the red sub-seconds and 24-hour hands set it off nicely. I think it’s the best Submersible GMT yet, but unfortunately it will only be available at Panerai boutiques, which might affect the likelihood of getting a discount off of its $12,300 list price. It should hit boutiques in September.

That’s it for the Panerai 2024 Watches and Wonders releases. Gradual evolution is the name of the game for Panerai, and these new models might not look fundamentally different from previous ones at a glance. But I like the new 24-hour rehaut on the PAM 1507, and the emergence of Ti-Ceramitech might turn out to be a very important advancement. Time will tell.
