Laurent Ferrier Série Atelier VI: Classic Auto Sandstone

Laurent Ferrier just dropped its annual limited edition Série Atelier watch, this time via the brand-new Classic Auto collection and with a rosey Sandstone dial. This 2024 exclusive will feel familiar to some, not just because it honors the brand’s enduring minimalistic and often whimsical aesthetics but because it borrows design cues from both the Classic and Sport Auto collections. Like the rest of the Série Atelier, the 2024 novelty will have a limited production of just 20 watches and be sold exclusively online or by directly contacting the brand.

First Thoughts on the Laurent Ferrier Classic Auto Sandstone

Each year, Laurent Ferrier releases a different limited edition watch under its Série Atelier collection. The tradition began in 2020 with the Classic Origin Green to commemorate the brand’s 10th anniversary and continues today with the new Classic Auto Sandstone. Each watch in the series is produced in very limited quantities and is only available online on a first-come, first-serve basis. The 2024 edition is a slight departure from the previous models, which featured muted shades of green and blue. Instead, the dial has a coppery tone that the brand likens to “the beauty of nature and the continuity of time.”  It has a quadrant dial and small seconds, like the 2020 Classic Origin Green, but with a convenient date display at 3 o’clock that slopes slightly away from the rest of the dial. Spear-shaped “Assegai” hands and sleek, drop-shaped white gold indices recall the brand’s overall minimalist and refined aesthetics. Lastly, the brand employs several finishing techniques to make the dial more dynamic. Most of Laurent Ferrier’s sandstone dial features a vertical satin-brushed finish, while the small seconds register is snailed, and the minute track has a circular satin-brushed finish.

The Classic Auto is a new model with the same caliber LF 270.01 automatic movement as the Sport Auto collection and the same round, pebble-shaped case and leather strap as the Classic collection. Hence, the name “Classic Auto.”  The movement is the second automatic calendar caliber in the brand’s portfolio and is produced entirely in-house. It features a Swiss lever escapement, a uni-directional ball bearing for better shock and vibration resistance, and a 72-hour power reserve. Flipping the watch over, we can see the movement in all its glory, complete with exquisite hand-finished details that required more than 139 finishing “operations” to achieve.

A watch from a respected brand like Laurent Ferrier with a very limited production run and an approachable price point will pique serious collectors’ interest or, at the very least, encourage them to buy for fear of missing out. I imagine you will have to be quick to order online or know someone at Laurent Ferrier to secure one.
