Complete Guide to the Bulgari Octo Finissimo
Although Bulgari acts like the Octo line debuted in 2012, it actually appeared in 2004 under the Gerald Genta brand (which they owned at the time). Designed by Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani, Bulgari’s head of design, the Octo’s multifaceted octagonal case has an attractive and unique wrist presence in any configuration. But the Octo didn’t really capture the full attention of the luxury watch world until 2014. That’s when the first two Bulgari Octo Finissimo models appeared, with ultra-thin 5mm cases. The tourbillon model was the thinnest tourbillon in the world at the time, and Bulgari has been releasing a steady stream of record-breaking and strong-selling Octo Finissimo models ever since. In this guide to the Bulgari Octo Finissimo, we’ll briefly cover the basics of the lineup before providing a thorough timeline of every reference.

Traits
Bulgari Octo Finissimo models have the following characteristics:
- Octagonal cases with 110 facets and round bezels (except for the preposterously thin Ultra models)
- Integrated bracelets or straps
- Water resistance of 100m for models with screwdown crown, 30m without (or 50m for minute repeater)
- Case diameter between 40-43mm
- Case thickness between 1.70-8.75mm
- Exhibition casebacks (again, except for the Ultra models)
- No full-size automatic rotors (always peripheral rotors, micro-rotors, or manual-wind movements)
- In-house movements made by Bulgari Manufacture de Haute Horlogerie in Le Sentier, Switzerland
Bulgari Octo Finissimo Model Families
When you include unique pieces and limited editions, Bulgari has already made more than 75 Octo Finissimo references so far. Before we list them all, let’s break them down into 12 categories:
- Manual-wind time-only (Petite Seconde)
- Manual-wind with case height under 2mm (Ultra)
- Manual-wind skeletonized time-only (Skeleton and later Skeleton 8 Days)
- Manual-wind tourbillon (Tourbillon)
- Manual-wind skeletonized tourbillon (Tourbillon Skeleton)
- Manual-wind minute repeater (Minute Repeater)
- Automatic time-only without screwdown crown (Automatic and later Extra Thin)
- Automatic time-only with screwdown crown (S and later Automatic)
- Automatic chronograph GMT (Chronograph GMT)
- Automatic perpetual calendar (Perpetual Calendar)
- Automatic skeletonized tourbillon (Tourbillon Automatic)
- Automatic skeletonized tourbillon chronograph (Tourbillon Chronograph)
Case Materials
The Octo Finissimo is probably most associated with titanium cases, because titanium is very strong and thus makes sense to use when you’re making watches as thin as possible. Platinum is similarly strong, but Bulgari Octo Finissimo models made out of steel or gold are typically a little bit thicker out of necessity.
Here’s a full list of case materials offered on Octo Finissimo models over the years:
- Platinum
- Yellow gold
- Rose gold
- Grade 5 titanium (uncoated, black DLC-coated, or blue PVD-coated)
- Stainless steel
- Carbon
- Black ceramic
- Tantalum (only for a one-off for the Only Watch auction)
The regular-thickness Octo watches (Octo L’Originale and its successor, Octo Roma) are also good-looking watches, but they always seem to get outshined by Bulgari’s many striking Octo Finissimo models. That might be because they keep setting so many world records. Let’s go over all of those briefly.
Bulgari Octo Finissimo World Record Timeline
Bulgari makes several of the thinnest watches in the world in various categories, and they’re all Octo Finissimo models. Other companies are on their heels (most notably Piaget, who now has the title of thinnest tourbillon) but Bulgari is clearly the leader in ultra-thin luxury watch records ever since the Octo Finissimo’s debut in 2014:
- 2014: Octo Finissimo Tourbillon (Thinnest tourbillon watch at the time, movement thickness 1.95mm, beaten out by a Piaget ten years later)
- 2016: Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater (Thinnest minute repeater ever, movement thickness 3.12mm)
- 2017: Octo Finissimo Automatic (Thinnest automatic watch at the time, movement thickness 2.23mm)
- 2018: Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic (World’s thinnest automatic tourbillon and thinnest automatic watch overall, movement thickness still 1.95mm)
- 2019: Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT Automatic (World’s thinnest mechanical chronograph despite also being an automatic GMT, movement thickness 3.30mm)
- 2020: Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Chronograph (Thinnest chronograph tourbillon, movement thickness 3.50mm)
- 2021: Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar (Thinnest perpetual calendar watch, movement thickness 2.75mm)
- 2022: Octo Finissimo Ultra (Thinnest mechanical watch at the time, insane total thickness of only 1.80mm, soon beaten by a 1.75mm Richard Mille)
- 2024: Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC (Thinnest certified chronometer ever, and thinnest mechanical production watch ever although there is an even thinner Konstantin Chaykin prototype, total thickness 1.70mm)
- 2025: Octo Finissimo Ultra Tourbillon (Thinnest tourbillon)
Notes on Naming Conventions
The original Octo Finissimo models have non-screwdown crowns and water resistance ratings of 30m. The Octo Finissimo S models (“S” stands for “steel”) that debuted in 2020 gained screwdown crowns and slightly thicker cases to get a water resistance of 100m. “S” stands for “steel” and denoted their extra hardiness, but Bulgari quickly started putting screwdown crowns and thicker cases on some non-steel models too, and the “S” designation was dropped. What used to be a regular “non-S” is now an “Extra Thin.”
Also, although the Octo Tourbillon Automatic and Octo Tourbillon Chronograph models are skeletonized, the model name “Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Skeleton” specifically refers to manual-wind time-only tourbillon models. And you may hear the French term “squelette” instead of “skeleton.”
The Octo Finissimo Automatic replaced the short-lived manual-winding Octo Finissimo Petite Seconde (meaning small seconds) in 2017 when the Caliber BVL 138 movement (which includes a micro-rotor for auto-winding) replaced the outgoing handwound BVL 128 without adding any thickness. Although later Octo Finissimo models also have small seconds subdials, the model name “Petite Seconde” really only refers to the time-only hand-wound ones from 2014-2016.

A Note on Bulgari Octo Finissimo Prices
The most basic steel Bulgari Octo Finissimo starts at $13,500, while the incredible Ultra COSC lists for $529,000. Secondhand Bulgari watch prices are usually quite favorable for buyers, although the Octo Finissimo holds its value relatively well. Generally, you can expect to find most models used for about 35% less than list price. Discounts on gold models might even be a bit better, while discounts for titanium models might be a bit less generous–but that should put you in the right ballpark. Except, notably, for any of the Bulgari Octo Finissimo “sketch dial” variants–even pre-owned those sell for right around their original MSRP ($20,000 ballpark for the steel ones).
A simple pre-owned steel Octo Finissimo can be had for $9,000 while basic time-only gold models on a straps can be found for about $15,000. In my opinion, the entire Octo Finissimo lineup is quite competitive at their respective price points, at least in terms of market price if not MSRP.
Hopefully this guide has given you all the info you need to determine which Octo Finissimo, if any, is right for you. One last thing I’ll mention is that caliber BVL 138–the workhorse time-only automatic movement of the Octo Finissimo lineup–was updated in 2022 to include fewer jewels, gold accents, and bevels on the movement. While some viewed it as a downgrade, Bulgari insists that a few engineering tweaks (including a larger platinum micro-rotor with more ball bearings) make the new version an improvement. I think Bulgari should have at least updated the movement code for the sake of transparency. If it’s truly an upgrade, why not proudly unveil the new “BVL 139?”
Regardless, as I said in my review of the Octo Finissimo 103286, these are very comfortable watches, oozing with unique aesthetic appeal without being too loud. It’s notoriously hard for renowned jewelry brands to lean into the luxury watch industry in a way that hardcore watch nerds respect, but Bulgari has managed to do just that, largely thanks to the Octo Finissimo. And I expect it won’t be long until I need to update this article with another world record.

You don’t have the limited edition 2024 models for the Yoshida store in green and blue limited to 88 pieces each. 103890 and 103889 are the reference numbers. Both are chrono GMTs
