When it comes to Richard Mille, there’s no shortage of wild materials, over-the-top cases, and sky-high price tags. But if there’s one model that helped define the brand’s ultra-modern, high-tech aesthetic, it’s the Richard Mille RM 11. First launched in the mid-2000s and designed in collaboration with Formula 1 legend Felipe Massa, the RM 11 became the blueprint for Richard Mille’s signature look: tonneau-shaped case, skeletonized dial, automatic flyback chronograph, and that unmistakable “racing machine for the wrist” vibe.

Richard Mille RM 11 Series
Every Richard Mille RM 11 is an automatic flyback chronograph.

Over the years, the RM 11 lineup has evolved through countless variations — different case materials, special limited editions, and even an updated movement. In 2013, Richard Mille reorganized its naming system to better group watches by theme and complication. And models from the RM 011 series (with sequential suffixes like RM 11-01, RM 11-02 and so on) are all automatic sport watches with flyback chronographs — some iterations include extra complications on top of that too.

Through it all, the RM 11 remains one of the most familiar and sought-after references in the Richard Mille catalog. In this guide, we’ll break down the key features, models, and history of Richard Mille RM 11 watches — and explain why they continue to be a collector favorite.

RM 011 Automatic Flyback Chronograph Felipe Massa (2007)

Launched in 20017, the RM 011 Automatic Flyback Chronograph Felipe Massa is the watch that kicked off one of Richard Mille’s most recognizable collections. Created in collaboration with Formula 1 driver Felipe Massa, the RM 011 set the tone for everything the brand would become known for: a bold tonneau-shaped case (50mm across by 40mm lug-to-lug by 16.15mm thick), a skeletonized dial packed with advanced functions, and a technical aesthetic inspired by high-performance motorsports.

Inside the RM 011 is the skeletonized automatic Caliber RMAC1, featuring a variable-geometry rotor that adjusts winding efficiency depending on the wearer’s activity. The flyback chronograph allows the stopwatch to be reset without stopping it first, and the layout includes a 60-minute countdown timer at 9 o’clock, a 12-hour totalizer, and an oversized date and month display — part of the integrated annual calendar function. The movement is mounted on rubber O-ring seals and secured by titanium spline screws and shock-resistant silent blocks.

No surprises here but the design pulls heavily from F1 cues. The pushers are shaped like pedals, the crown resembles a tire, and the aerodynamic curves of the case mirror those of a racecar chassis. While the original edition was fashioned in titanium, over the years, the RM 011 Felipe Massa was produced in various other materials — including gold, ceramic, carbon TPT, silicon nitride, and quartz TPT. In 2015, Richard Mille even unveiled an RM 011 fitted with a matching titanium bracelet, which is rare for the brand. Prices for Richard Mille RM 011 watches on the secondary market range from $150,000 for titanium versions but go up from there in more exotic or precious materials. Richard Mille discontinued the RM 011 in 2016 to make way for the RM 11-03, which we’ll go into detail later.

RM 11-01 Automatic Flyback Chronograph Roberto Mancini (2013)

The RM 11-01 Roberto Mancini, released in 2013, was developed specifically with soccer in mind — a rare example of a chronograph designed for tracking the two 45-minute halves of a football match, plus stoppage time. Richard Mille collaborated directly with Italian coach Roberto Mancini to bring the concept to life, resulting in a flyback chronograph with a dial that displays match timing in a clear, linear format.

Powering the RM 11-01 is the same automatic RMAC1 caliber, the skeletonized flyback chronograph movement with a 60-minute countdown timer positioned at 9 o’clock. However, thanks to the dial design, this same movement can be used to track each half of a match. The dial layout also includes a 24-hour totalizer at 6 o’clock, a month indicator between 4 and 5 o’clock, and an oversized date display below 12 o’clock. The rotor features variable geometry, allowing for customized winding efficiency based on the wearer’s activity level. The movement offers a power reserve of approximately 55 hours.

The signature RM tonneau-shaped case, which is available in titanium or rose gold, measures 50mm by 40mm and is 16.15mm thick.

The RM 11-02 Automatic Flyback Chronograph Dual Time Zone, introduced in 2014, builds upon the foundation of the RM 011 by incorporating additional features tailored for travelers. While retaining the signature tonneau-shaped case, this model introduced a UTC function (often called a GMT watch), allowing for the indication of a second time zone via a Super-LumiNova-filled hand. An additional pusher at 9 o’clock sets second time zone, distinguishing it from its predecessor.

At the heart of the RM 11-02 is the skeletonized automatic Caliber RMAC2, crafted from PVD-treated titanium. Like the RMAC1, this movement offers a flyback chronograph with minutes and countdown counters at 9 o’clock, an hour counter at 6 o’clock, an annual calendar with an oversized date display under 12 o’clock, and a month display between 4 and 5 o’clock. The movement also features a variable-geometry rotor and a power reserve of approximately 50 hours. Unlike the RMAC1, however, there’s also a UTC function.

The RM 11-02 watch was predominately available in titanium and rose gold. However, this being Richard Mille, there were some limited edition models in more exotic materials too.

Richard Mille RM 11-03 Automatic Flyback Chronograph (2016)

In 2016, Richard Mille introduced the RM 11-03 Automatic Flyback Chronograph, a direct successor to the original RM 011. While it retained the core DNA of its predecessor — including the tonneau-shaped case, skeletonized dial, and flyback chronograph functionality — the RM 11-03 brought several key updates to both design and movement.

Aesthetically, the RM 11-03 modernized the original design, most notably with a reworked bezel that now includes grooves and protrusions for visual interest, and a refreshed crown. The result is that the RM 11-03 looks a lot bigger than the RM 011 looks larger on the wrist despite it retaining similar dimensions to its predecessor (49.94 by 44.50 by 16.15mm). As always, the chronograph pushers are inspired by race car pedals while the crown draws design cues from a wheel rim. The RM 11-03 has been produced in a range of materials, including titanium, rose gold, carbon TPT, and more.

Another difference between the RM 011 and RM 11-03 is the movement inside; Richard Mille fitted the RM 11-03 with the then-new Caliber RMAC automatic movement. The RMAC3 movement inside the RM 11-03 sticks to the same mechanical formula as the original RM 011 — it’s still made by Vaucher and still features an annual calendar and flyback chronograph. The calendar accounts for 30- and 31-day months, so it only needs adjusting once a year at the end of February. And thanks to the flyback function, you can reset and restart the chronograph with a single press, no need to stop it first. While the functions haven’t changed, the finishing has. The RMAC3 gets a fresh look with brushed titanium bridges and an updated variable-geometry rotor. That rotor, which we’ve seen on many RM calibers before, includes adjustable flaps to fine-tune winding efficiency based on activity level — although you’ll need a watchmaker to make those adjustments.

One of the most hyped variants is the RM 11-03 McLaren, released in 2018 as a limited edition of 500 pieces, made from a proprietary material called Carbon TPT infused with orange quartz fibers, which was a nod to McLaren’s signature color. The case also incorporates titanium pushers shaped like the headlights of the McLaren 720S, and the crown mimics the wheel rims of McLaren’s hypercars.

Other limited edition RM 11-03 watches include:

  • RM 11-03 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary – Limited to 150 pieces
  • RM 11-03 Ultimate Edition – Limited to 200 pieces
  • RM 11-03 Last White Edition – Limited to 33 pieces
  • RM 11-03 Last Black Edition – Limited to 33 pieces
  • RM 11-03 Le Mans Classic – Limited to 150 pieces

RM 11-04 Automatic Flyback Chronograph Roberto Mancini (2019)

RM 11-04 Roberto Mancini

Just like the RM 11-03 was the refreshed version of the RM 011, the RM 11-04 was the updated iteration of the RM 11-01. Like its predecessor, the RM 11-04 is designed to track the two 45-minute halves of a soccer match, plus up to 15 minutes of stoppage time — with the flyback function cleverly resetting the chronograph for each segment of play.

The big update here is visual. Not only did the case (49.94 by 44.5 by 16.15mm) get the Carbon TPT treatment, but the bezel is also more aggressively styled with the same indentations as the RM 110-3. The crown design also got an overall, and the color scheme tips a hat to the Italian national team with splashes of Azzurri blue, red, green, and white.

No surprises here, but the newer version also got the updated RMAC3 caliber for its engine, complete with flyback chronograph, annual calendar (with oversized date and month display), and a 55-hour power reserve. The movement also features a double barrel for more stable torque, a free-sprung balance wheel with variable inertia, and a variable-geometry rotor.

Richard Mille RM 11-05 Automatic Flyback Chronograph GMT (2020)

Given that the RM011 and RM 11-01 were both replaced with newer versions, it was only a matter of time before Richard Mille turned its attention to upgrading the RM 11-02. This is precisely what happened in 2020 with the introduction of the RM 11-05 Automatic Flyback Chronograph GMT watch, limited to just 150 pieces. Unlike the RM 11-03 and RM 11-04, the RM 11-05 did not include the new-gen grooves on the bezel, rather, it stuck to the streamlined look of the first-gen cases. However, what was new was the use of grey Cermet for the case construction.

RM 11-05 in Gray Cermet (Image: Richard Mille)

Gray Cermet is one of the hardest materials Richard Mille has ever used, clocking in at 2,360 Vickers and just shy of diamond (2,400 Vickers) on the hardness scale. The lightweight material wasn’t new to the brand (a brown version showed up on the RM 52 Pharrell Williams the year prior), but it was the first time we saw it in a sleek, matte grey tone. Gray Cermet gets its color from a mix of metallic zirconium and ceramic particles — a combo that’s tough to pull off. Fusing those two materials together at high heat without messing up their individual properties took serious technical effort. And because Richard Mille avoided using nickel or cobalt (to meet European safety standards), getting a smooth, even finish was even more of a challenge.

The grey Cermet bezel is combined with a Carbon TPT caseband and a grade 5 titanium caseback; measurements are in line with the rest of the RM 11 series, coming in at 50 x 42.70mm and 16.15mm thick. Complementing the moody gray case are the orange and light blue accents sprinkled across the dial, flange, crown, pushers, and strap.

Like the RM 11-03 and RM 11-04, the RM 11-05 is also powered by the RMAC3 movement with 55 hours of power reserve, but in addition to the flyback chronograph and annual calendar functions, this model also benefits from the addition of a GMT hand.

Richard Mille RM 11 Series Discontinuation And Pre-Owned Prices

In 2020, Richard Mille released the RM 11-03 Automatic Ultimate Edition — a 200-piece limited edition created as the swan song for the collection. As the brand stated, this last RM 11-3 watch “celebrates 13 years of chronograph history and closes the curtain on one of the brand’s most iconic models, the ‘RM 011´ series.” Interestingly, Richard Mille opted to power this goodbye watch, which was constructed in Carbon TPT layered with turquoise Quartz TPT, with the original Caliber RMAC1 rather than the newer Caliber RMAC3 movement.

Richard Mille no longer produces the RM 11 series, but it remains one of the brand’s most identifiable and coveted models. Thanks to its popularity, this now-discontinued RM watch still commands high premiums on the secondary market. Generally speaking, the RM 11-01 Roberto Mancini and RM 011 are the least expensive Richard Mille models of the series, starting at around $150,000 on the pre-owned market. On the other hand, prices for the newer-generation RM 11-03 will generally start at around $200,000.

Richard Mille RM 11 Watch Prices on the Pre-Owned Market

  • RM011 starting price: $150,000
  • RM 11-01 starting price: $150,000
  • RM 11-02 starting price: $195,000
  • RM 11-03 starting price: $200,000
  • RM 11-04 starting price: $400,000
  • RM 11-05 starting price: $450,000

Though there is no direct replacement of the RM 11 series in the current Richard Mille catalog, the RM 72-01 automatic flyback chronograph is the closest model yet, featuring the brand’s first completely in-house-made movement. The RM 72-01 case is tonneau-shaped but it’s quite smaller than the RM 11, and while there is a date window, there are no month display or annual calendar complication.

The RM 11 series may be officially retired, but its impact on Richard Mille’s identity is impossible to overstate. From the original Felipe Massa to the Ultimate Edition swan song, these chronographs helped define the brand’s modern era. And they’re not fading from collector wishlists anytime soon.
