Glashütte Original has added two bright limited-edition colorways to its Seventies Panorama Date Chronograph collection: A coral red known as “Watermelon” and a light turquoise known as “Swimming Pool.” These playful dial colors seem appropriate on a 1970s-inspired watch. Only 100 of each dial will be made, with both being available on either a black rubber strap or a steel bracelet. Let’s quickly go over all the specs and pricing.

Thoughts

The current Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date collection debuted in 2014. Originally it was called a “Senator Seventies” but they, smartly I think, dropped the “Senator” part. Its caliber 37-02 is an integrated chronograph movement featuring a column wheel, flyback function, power reserve indicator, and the brand’s signature Panorama Date display. Glashütte Original makes beautifully finished movements and this one is no exception.

GO packs an impressive amount of horology into these watches without looking cluttered. The subtle power reserve indicator in the 9 o’clock subdial could easily go unnoticed, and the clever numerical hour counter in the middle of the dial negates the need for a third subdial.

Ten years is a long time for a watch to go unchanged (except for dial colors) in today’s luxury watch world, but this collection already has everything modern watch buyers expect–namely, a long power reserve and a micro-adjust clasp. In fact Glashütte Original’s micro-adjust clasps are some of the most revered in the industry.

Glashütte Original typically only offers a couple of colorways at a time for each model, rotating new ones in every year or two. Colors like Ocean Breeze are in the past, but you can still get navy blue or dark olive green dials in addition to the new Swimming Pool and Watermelon. Glashütte Original talks about the “summer vibes” these dials bring, and I can definitely see that. Mid-August is an interesting choice for a release date for a “summer vibes” watch but regardless, these dials look nice. Both the Swimming Pool and Watermelon dials use matte lacquer paint.

Conclusion

I’m sure some people will inevitably call the turquoise one a “Tiffany” and an equal number of people will angrily cry that “that’s not a Tiffany!” And it is a more vibrant aqua compared to the paler true Tiffany color. Whether or not you’re OK with using the term “Tiffany” as a generic colloquialism for “light turquoise,” it’s an appealing color. But I suspect the Watermelon colorway may actually get more attention.

At $14,800 on a rubber strap (add $1,200 for the bracelet), these aren’t cheap watches. But the Rolex Daytona is priced similarly, and the Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date certainly has more complications and more exquisite movement finishing. I don’t expect Glashütte Original to have any trouble selling a hundred of each of these.
