How Much is a Hublot Big Bang Watch?

Celine Simon Saturday, February 24th, 2024 7 min. read

True to its name, the Hublot Big Bang chronograph exploded onto the scene in 2005 and quickly became the must-have luxury watch of the moment. Since then, Hublot has made countless iterations of the Big Bang and it remains the company’s signature timepiece. So how much does a Hublot Big Bang cost? Read on to find out.

Hublot Big Bang Price Range

The retail price for men’s Big Bang watches starts at $12,900. Sticker prices can quickly go up from there, sometimes well into the six-figure range for limited editions, ultra-complicated models, and exotic material variations. However, prices for Hublot Big Bang watches on the secondary market are typically significantly less expensive, with pre-owned prices starting as low as $6,000 for smaller and more basic models. Generally speaking, a good majority of non-precious metal Hublot Big Bang watches cost between $7,000 to $15,000 on the secondary market.

Hublot Big Bang

Big Bang Original

Of all the big luxury brands in the market today, Hublot is widely regarded as the most divisive. While Hublot watches and the Big Bang in particular have plenty of fans, there are almost as many critics of the company and the watches it makes.

Watch on Grey Market TV: Why is Hublot the Most Hated Watch Brand?

Regardless of which camp you belong to, what can’t be denied is the frenzy that the Hublot Big Bang caused when it debuted at Baselworld 2005. A few of the Big Bang’s signature design details included the H-shaped screws on the bezel, a porthole-inspired case (hublot is French for porthole), a modern aesthetic, and a combination of materials. The company leaned into the “Art of Fusion” mantra by combining various materials into those first Big Bang models including gold, ceramic, Kevlar, carbon, and rubber.

The Big Bang Original line is home to those initial designs that put Hublot on the map. While the first models were 44.5mm editions offered in either rose gold/ceramic or white/gold ceramic, other material and size options soon joined the lineup. Some popular models within this collection include the Big Bang Orignal 44mm ref. 301.SB.131.RX in steel and ceramic and the full steel Big Bang Original 44mm ref. 301.SX.130.RX.

Big Bang Unico

In 2013, Hublot unveiled the Big Bang Unico, a watch powered by the in-house-made Unico chronograph movement. Aside from an in-house movement, the Big Bang Unico also had a slightly different design from the Big Bang Original. For instance, it had a larger case that measured 45.5mm across rather than 44mm. Furthermore, the Unico had round chronograph pushers instead of rectangular ones and it included the “One Click” lug system that made switching out straps a breeze.

Back to Basics: What is a Chronograph Watch?

Since the Big Bang Unico’s debut, Hublot reworked the design slightly and now the two main sizes of the collection are 44mm and 42mm. The Big Bang Unico line is also home to “Integrated” models, which have bracelets that are integrated into the case.

While the Big Bang Unico is offered in more muted colors such as black, gray, gold, and silver, there are also plenty of vibrant shades (purple, orange, turquoise, red, yellow, green, and so on) to choose from. Hublot was a pioneer in making full sapphire crystal cases, which is an extraordinarily difficult process. Although the company started with transparent sapphire cases, Hublot eventually moved on to colored sapphire cases including a few Big Bang Unico Sapphire editions.

Big Bang Meca-10

In 2016, Hublot introduced the Big Bang Meca-10 line with a brand new in-house movement, which boasted a 10-day power reserve. Inspired by Meccano building kits, the skeletonized caliber featured an atypical architecture, complete with visible rack systems that mimic those found on the model construction kits.

Hublot Big Bang Meca-10 watches are big–especially considering that they’re non-chronograph models–sporting 45mm cases. There’s an innovative power reserve indicator on the open-worked dial and in true Hublot fashion, the watches are available in a variety of materials.

In 2021, Hublot unleashed the Big Bang Tourbillon Automatic collection, powered by a new in-house self-winding tourbillon movement.

In true Hublot fashion, cutting-edge materials were used to craft the cases including orange sapphire (a world first), in addition to carbon fiber and black ceramic editions. Other models have since joined the Big Bang Tourbillon automatic collection including purple sapphire and neon yellow SAXEM, which stands for Sapphire Aluminum oXide and rare Earth Mineral and is structurally similar to sapphire crystal but allows for brighter hues.

Big Bang MP-11

In 2018, Hublot launched the Big Bang MP-11, powered by an intriguing in-house movement that offers an impressive 14-day power reserve. The stack of mainspring barrels is visible from the dial side, which, unlike the Hublot MP-05 LaFerrari that requires a drill to wind, is wound via the crown. Like all Big Bang lines, the MP-11 variants are offered in plenty of different materials and price points.

Big Bang Sang Bleu II

Aside from bold designs and cutting-edge materials, Hublot is also known for its collaborations with artists, taste-makers, athletes, and other personalities outside the watch world. One example is Hublot’s work with Maxime Plescia-Büchi, a tattoo artist and founder of the Sang Bleu creative agency.

Hublot Big Bang Sang Bleu watches are highly geometrically stylized variants with sharp lines, angles, and facets peppered throughout the pieces.

Big Bang Cost and Price Analysis

As we’ve illustrated, Hublot Big Bang watches generally do not hold their value as well as other big watch brands, and are almost always cheaper to buy in the secondary market.

Therefore, if you’re looking to add a Big Bang watch to your collection and want to save thousands of dollars, you’re likely better off buying an example from a grey market watch dealer in the secondary market.
