Gübelin is a Swiss fine watch and jewelry company that opened for business October 11, 1854. The company’s founder, a then 22-year old Jakob Josef Moritz Breitschmid initially as a watch shop that sold pocket watches, verge watches and mantelpiece clocks. Jacob would later move on to father five children, one being daughter Bertha Sophia who would later marry Eduard Jakob Gübelin, the company’s namesake. In 1899, Gübelin took over his father in law’s business and ushered in the era of Gübelin watchmaking and trading. The company continued to expand with its constant innovations and eye for the future. In 1923, Gübelin began making and selling jewelry along with watches and clocks. As the company’s jewelry sector continued to grow and flourish, the company saw that it was quite easy to come across gemstones that were not of the quality they desired.
