While exploring the depths, you might spot
Romain Jerome's source of vintage raw materials
for his line of Titanic DNA watches, confected
from the rusty hull of the Titanic. Designed to
appeal to collectors of historical memorabilia,
rust is the metal of choice for Jerome and seems
to capture the maker's particular concept of the
relentless passage of time.
However, the prize for unabashed originality
must go to Jerome’s timepiece that does not tell
the time. Touted as a “conceptual, symbolic and
emotional” way to view the passing of time, the
Day&Night is bereft of hour markers and proposes
splitting our days into two 12 hour units, visually
represented by a pair of sequentially operated
tourbillons. The bezel is crafted from rusty steel
from the wreck, which has been stabilised with
new steel to prevent it disintegrating on your
wrist. Even coal collected from the legendary
shipwreck’s furnace has made its way onto the
black carbon dial, making this an absolutely first
class horological icebreaker. |
