Antique jewelry is not only beautiful, but also allows the wearer to appreciate the styles, craftsmanship, and history of a past era. Antique jewelry is any jewelry that predates the 1930s.
Antique jewelry or the term antique is used to mean different things. The most accepted definition is any object that is over 100 years old in age. Sometimes the term means anything over 75 years old. This is a more recent interpretation because of the scarcity of antiques.
Victorian era (1837 – 1901) – resulting in very sentimental jewelry often featuring locks of hair and very popular Egyptian themes. Named after Britain’s beloved Queen Victoria who reigned for a very long time. Also in this time, increased travel and the interest in archaeology led to the design of Egyptian-themed jewelry.
Art Nouveau (1880’s – 1910) – started in France and dominated by themes of nature – this period was short-lived but is still highly sought-after this period. It is known for its very sensual jewelry.
Edwardian period (1901 – 1910) – very delicate, feminine and almost lacy in design – pieces were often made with platinum which was not used prior to this period. Diamonds were once again used plentifully and these pieces often contained pearls. Bows and garlands were popular themes in the designs.
Art Deco (1918 – 1938) - covering basically the period of the two World Wars and celebrates the industrial strides made in the 1st part of the 20th century. This is also the time when spectacular gemstones were discovered like sapphires, emeralds and the Burmese ruby.
This period saw these gemstones become extremely popular and this is also when square-cut diamonds were introduced which we now call princess or baguette diamonds.
